Arena was founded by Horst Dassler (of adidas), who was so inspired by Mark Spitz’ seven Olympic medals in the 1972 Munich Olympics that he created a new performance swimwear brand for him. Issue 14

The annual SA Fishing Tackle Agents and Distributors (SAFTAD) trade show was again deemed to be a success, especially as all exhibitors were for the first time housed in one big hall. (Read more).

 

Sports Trader was one of the exhibitors at this year’s SAFTAD trade show, where we handed out the newly published 2008 Tackle Trader Directory to retailers who visited our stand. Other retailers selling fishing tackle will receive their directories with the August/September Sports Trader, which will be mailed this week. A review of the highlights of the trade show will be published in this issue of Sports Trader – which will in future also cover fishing related articles as the Tackle Trader will only be published as a directory. Please note that an error occurred on page 40 of the Tackle Trader directory: Goya Trading is NOT a Mustad distributor.

 

The next generation of the SA sports industry is growing in numbers:
  • In the beginning of June this year, Jenene Cronning of Ukhusa Brandhouse gave birth to a baby boy called Reece;
  • Andrew Wentzel snr of WET Sports is a proud grandfather after Andrew Wentzel jnr’s wife presented him with his first grandchild - a baby girl called Bethany;
  • Peter Wright of K&T Sports and Lindsey Carlisle of Leisure Holdings are the proud parents of Katie Mary, born last month. With dad an international hockey umpire and mom a former captain of the women’s international side, any guesses on what her sport will be?

 

Mind Sports SA is taking legal action against the Minister of Sport and Recreation and several others for allegedly interfering in team selection, which they maintain is the right of the responsible sporting federation – making this a test case that could have far-reaching implications for the future selection of all sports teams. A well known figure in the history of the South African sports industry, Eric Andrews, passed away earlier this year. It is fitting to pay tribute to a man that was not only involved in sport and development, but contributed to the shaping of the South African sports industry. (Read more)

Thinus Brummer of Thinus Rakette in Vanderbijlpark has retired after many years in the industry. Daleen van Rooyen, his right hand in the business for more than ten years, has bought his shares and is now the owner of the racket-specialist store.


Crocs Inc. has bought back their distribution rights for Southern Africa from Tidal Trade cc. The organization with all its staff and contact details remain as previous, except for the name change from Tidal Trade to Crocs SA (Pty) Ltd.


Results from the second quarter Bureau for Economic Research (BER) Retail Survey reveal that the confidence levels of retailers recovered slightly after reaching a 5 year low during the first quarter of 2008. (Read more)

De Wet Sports have signed a sole distributorship agreement with DITA in the Netherlands that enables them to market and distribute the entire range of DITA hockey products in the Southern Africa region. (Read more)

 

Aged 155 years and worn in more than 160 countries, Levi’s has been an aspirational brand name for the young at heart from 8–80 years old. In SA, Footwear Trading has the license to develop footwear ranges. Their 2009 Spring/Summer collection, sneakers, casual wear and even some cutting edge high heels!, was recently introduced at countrywide rocking parties.

 

Capestorm is apparel sponsor of South Africa’s renowned wildlife filmmakers, the Foster Brothers Film Production crew, who recently completed a documentary production on the Antarctic continent, commissioned by the SA government to educate the public on the effects of climate change. » K-Swiss was the official run course sponsor for the recently completed Ford Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, where seven athletes represented K-Swiss USA and Australia. » Running shoes are the top-selling shoe style in the US, according to the US Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (SGMA), growing 5.3% from 2006-2007. But, as in SA, consumers tend to spend less on running shoes, giving preference to less expensive lower performance shoes, reports the research company NPD. Still, running is #4 on the list of ‘Hottest Sports for Sales Growth”, reports Running USA in their annual State of the Sport series. They predict that as the stress of the economic crunch takes its toll, more people will take to running as a form of stress-relief.

Nike International’s income and revenues for the fiscal year 2008 grew 26% to $1.9-m. Revenues for the year increased 14% to $18.6-bn. Fourth-quarter profits were $490.5-m and sales for the period grew 16% to $5.12-bn.


China is evolving from a manufacturing country to replace Japan as the world’s second-largest retail market by 2012, says a new report by TNS Retail Forward (see http://www.retailforward.com/pressroom/pressreleases.asp). Fashion is set to be a cornerstone of that growth, and by 2012, Chinese apparel and footwear sales are expected to be $214-bn, a 71% rise from the $125-bn in 2007. By 2012 the US apparel and footwear sales are expected to be $431-bn, a growth of 21%.

Apart from exhibiting at the SAFTAD Show in Johannesburg from 16-18 August, Akals/ The Midas Group will be hosting their annual client shows in Johannesburg on 2-3 August, Durban on 10 August, Port Elizabeth on 17 August and Cape Town on 24 August.

Asia Outdoor is expected to attract 250 exhibitors to Nanjing this year from 30 July to 2 August 2008 (just before the start of the Beijing Olympics) has entered its third year and received yet another outstanding response. (Read more)

 

With many of the Chinese tackle manufacturers based in Shanghai, the 2008 Shanghai International Fishing & Outdoor Equipment Trade Expo, held 9-11 November this year, hopes to attract visitors from across the world. A new “Concepts” category has been introduced as part of the OutDoor (Friedrichshafen) Industry Award 2008. All entries for the 3rd outdoor industry award, must be submitted by June 6th. (Read more)

 

Asia Outdoor, a cooperation between Messe Friedrichshafen and the exhibition grounds in Nanjing, China, has experienced 30% growth in outdoor brands interested in exhibiting at this show from 30 July - 2 August 2008. (Read more)

The next ispo, ispo China Winter 2008, will take place 24-26 February at the China international Exhibition Centre.
